Understanding “Free Choice” and “Hand Fed” Feeds Which Include Chlortetracycline

As the new VFD labels come into effect, a common question is the status of “free choice” and “hand fed” feeds, especially in relation to medicated mineral feeds. Free choice is defined as “a method of feeding livestock in which various feeds are kept constantly available and the feeders (animals) are allowed to balance their own diet.” Read full article
Extralabel Use of Medicated Feeds for Minor Species

In December of 2016 the Center for Veterinary Medicine of the FDA issued a revised Compliance Policy Guide (CPG) in which the extralabel use of approved drugs in medicated feed may be considered for minor species. Minor species are defined as animals other than cattle, horses, swine, chickens, turkeys, dogs, and cats. Read full article
