The Ins And Outs Of Extra-Label Drug Use

The FDA is ringing in the New Year by providing a resource for veterinarians to learn more about their rights of extra-label use. In 1994, Congress added provisions to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that gave veterinarians the ability to use approved human and animal drugs in an extra-label manner, a manner which is also known as “Off the label” because you are using a drug in a way that is not listed on the label. There are many requirements to be met with extra-label drug use, which is why the FDA is making sure all veterinarians are informed and able to ensure proper use.
